Hercules and the Amazon Women (1994)

"Because you don't know any other way. You've become exactly like the men you hate."

This line is spoken by Hercules, and is directed Hippolyta played by Roma Downey, who’s depiction of the Amazon-Queen of a forest-people known as the Amazons. All of them being women, they have come to believe rather like a great many feminist that there is no longer any need for men, and thus has begun to ignore the nature inherent in her own heart and spirit.

The truth of the matter is that the local village of men who send for Hercules have also become spineless and weak, also.

The plot of the film is simple, with Hercules returning home to attend Iolaus his friend’s wedding, and with the two deciding to accept Pithius’s request for aid. The two embark on an adventure to aid the village of men, known as Gargarensia and swiftly notice that there’s a lack of women.

Once Iolaus’s slain Herc surrenders, is imprisoned escapes and teaches both villages the necessity of communication. A concept that both sexes to-day could stand to learn, and that neither sex wishes to do at first.

A grand battle ensues at the end, there’s some time-travel hijinks and people are revived (sort of) and as part of the deal Hercules could never meet his first adult love Hippolyta again.

In all it is a message heavy film, with good acting especially by the leading man Kevin Sorbo, who would go on to star as Hercules for half a decade. Michael Hurst as Iolaus is good, and so is the first (of many) Zeus actors, Anthony Quinn.

Two Stars out of Four.
